The Government of Ghana has declared Friday, March 20 and Saturday, March 21, 2026, as statutory public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, which signify the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. The announcement was made by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.
According to the minister, an additional public holiday will be observed on Monday, March 23, because March 21 falls on a Saturday. The decision follows provisions in the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), which allows the President to declare an extra holiday when a statutory holiday occurs during the weekend.
The declaration means public institutions, schools, and businesses across the country will observe a long weekend. Eid-ul-Fitr is widely celebrated by Muslims with prayers, charity, and family gatherings to mark the successful completion of the Ramadan fast.
