The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested 12 suspects during a targeted anti-drug operation in Tamale aimed at combating narcotics trafficking and related criminal activities in the area. The operation formed part of ongoing efforts by the police to clamp down on the illegal drug trade and maintain public safety in the region.

According to the police, the exercise focused on several communities including Gurugu, Gumani, Kanvilli and Gbela, where officers apprehended individuals allegedly involved in the possession and distribution of illicit drugs. Some of the suspects were reportedly found with substances believed to be Indian hemp and tramadol, commonly associated with drug abuse in the area.

Authorities indicated that the suspects, aged between 20 and 56 years, are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations as the command continues its campaign against drug-related offences. The police stressed that the operation forms part of a broader strategy to dismantle networks involved in narcotics trafficking in the Northern Region.

In a separate but related incident, officers also rescued a newborn baby boy who had been abandoned in a gutter near the Police Barracks area in Tamale on March 15, 2026. The infant was quickly taken to the Tamale Central Hospital where he is currently receiving medical attention.

The Northern Regional Police Command has assured the public of its continued commitment to tackling drug-related crimes and protecting vulnerable persons in the community.
